Chinese battery maker SVOLT has confirmed it will begin series production of a semi-solid-state battery this September, nearly a full year ahead of the 2027 timeline it had originally set. It's not the only Chinese company moving up its clock. Together, these moves are a signal that the gap between Chinese and Western battery timelines may be widening faster than most U.S. automakers are prepared for.
SVOLT Pulls Its Timeline Forward by a Year
SVOLT, a battery maker spun off from Great Wall Motor in 2018, had originally planned trial production of its semi-solid-state cells for late 2025, with full series production not arriving until 2027. That schedule has now been compressed: series production starts this September, roughly a year ahead of plan. The first-generation cells are rated at 300 Wh/kg, with a second generation targeting 360 Wh/kg already in development, and SVOLT says it's building a 100 kWh version of the battery for mass production this September as well.
Why the Cost Detail Matters More Than the Range Number
The energy density figures are notable, but the more consequential claim is on cost: SVOLT says these semi-solid-state packs are expected to reach price parity with conventional lithium-ion batteries. That's the detail that turns a lab breakthrough into a mass-market product. A battery that's safer and denser but twice as expensive stays a niche option; one that costs the same as what's already on the line is a battery an automaker can actually put into a mainstream vehicle. SVOLT's CEO, Yang Hongxin, has framed 2026 as the year these hybrid solid-liquid batteries move from experimental to broadly accepted — and BMW's Mini brand is already lined up to use them in upcoming models.
SVOLT Isn't Racing Alone
SVOLT's compressed timeline lands alongside a similar push from Greater Bay Technology (GBT), a Chinese battery company backed by automaker GAC Group. GBT completed its first A-sample solid-state cells in April 2026 and is targeting mass production by the end of this year. The company says its cells have passed a range of stress tests without catching fire or exploding, and — perhaps most strikingly — it's targeting a range of over 621 miles on a single charge, using cells that contain no liquid electrolyte at all.
Two Different Approaches, One Shared Direction
SVOLT and GBT aren't building the exact same technology — SVOLT's near-term product is a semi-solid-state hybrid, still using some liquid electrolyte, while GBT is pushing toward a fully solid-state cell with none. But the direction is the same: both are racing to get next-generation battery chemistry into real production lines years ahead of what most of the industry assumed was possible, and both are doing it with actual manufacturing milestones rather than concept-car promises.
Where That Leaves the U.S. Battery Pipeline
For comparison, Toyota — one of the most prominent global players in solid-state battery development — has been targeting a 2027-28 launch window for its own solid-state technology. If GBT hits mass production by the end of 2026, it will have beaten Toyota's timeline by a year or more, and SVOLT's semi-solid cells will already be a year into series production by then. That's the real story here: this isn't just China matching Western battery roadmaps, it's Chinese manufacturers moving the goalposts earlier while established players are still working toward the dates they set years ago.
The Vehicles on U.S. Roads Aren't Waiting on This Yet
None of this changes what's already on American roads today. The battery packs going into most EVs sold in the U.S. remain conventional liquid-electrolyte lithium-ion cells, and neither SVOLT nor GBT has announced deals with American brands. But battery technology transitions take years to move from a factory announcement to a vehicle in a showroom, and the automakers that lock in next-generation cell suppliers first tend to keep that advantage for a full product cycle. If Chinese semi-solid and solid-state cells reach cost parity with today's lithium-ion batteries while offering meaningfully more range, that's a competitive edge that shows up first in China's domestic and export markets — and eventually in the range and pricing conversations U.S. automakers have with their own customers.
What to Watch Next
The next real checkpoint is whether SVOLT's September series production actually ships batteries into vehicles at volume, and whether GBT hits its end-of-2026 mass production target without slipping. Both would confirm that this is a genuine manufacturing shift rather than an accelerated announcement. Either way, the pattern is now hard to ignore: real production dates are landing in China months apart, while the rest of the industry is still talking in terms of "by 2027 or 2028."
